The Style Block Goes First

The style block is the first thing in the prompt, and it is the same block in every prompt. Nolan is the default preset and it is 1 named bundle rather than a list of adjectives: documentary film, 35 millimetres, natural skin texture, visible pores, unretouched skin, natural window light, far-side key, shallow depth of field, subject centred, handheld documentary truth, film grain and halation, 1 signature colour. Under the bundle sits the negative list, and it is named rather than implied. That is the whole mechanism. A block that goes first is a decision. A filter that goes last is a correction. Only 1 of the 2 can still change where the light falls, because by the time a filter runs the frame is already lit and the light is already wrong. So the test is not taste. Count the prompts in the finished film. If the block is at the front of all 240 of them, and identical in all 240, the film carries 1 look. Type it fresh each time and you get 240 looks in 1 folder.

The lens ladder is 2 primary focals and 4 fallbacks, and the primary pair is 25 millimetres for the close-up and 40 millimetres for the over-shoulder. 25 is the wide close-up. The subject stays inside their own space with the room still visible around them, which is the difference between a portrait and a person standing in a place. 40 is the long end of the IMAX sweet spot and the workhorse for anything over a shoulder, where the face and the hands stay in the same frame. The fallback ladder is 24 wide, 35 world, 50 natural, 85 isolate. Hold 1 per beat group, not 1 per shot, and change nothing inside the group. Nothing past 85. Immersion dies there, and no grade brings it back afterwards. Cut from 24 to 85 inside 1 beat group and you have not made an interesting choice. You have made a different film in the middle of this 1, and the audience feels it without being able to name it.

Shallow depth of field, wide open, only the subject in focus and the background melting behind them. Subject dead centre, no hunting left or right. Handheld for the subjective, locked off for the objective. The camera has a posture, and the posture is chosen per scene rather than per shot. Far-side key, so 1 half of the face is lit and the other half stays in shadow. Subtraction, which is the 5th decision and the 1 that governs the other 4: take out the background, the polish, the scan and the artifice until nothing is left between the viewer and the subject. 5 decisions, 4 of them refusals, and 1 look that reads the same in shot 3 and shot 300.

4 formats, 3 stocks, 1 grade, and all of it settled before the first image exists. 35 millimetres is the default: fine grain, 1.85:1 or 2.40:1 anamorphic, halation. 16 millimetres is heavy grain for documentary and archival timelines. 65 millimetres is near-zero grain and 1.43:1 tall, reserved for setpieces. HD-digital has no grain at all and reads as video, which is the AI default; avoid it unless the flatness is the point. Stocks: the 500 tungsten stock for interiors and night, the 50 and 250 daylight stocks outside, and 5222 when a sequence belongs to a separate black and white timeline. Grade last and grade once. Shoot flat, then tie 1 signature colour across the scene, the wardrobe and the character, so the film is held together by 1 choice instead of 40. Format before image 1 is the cheapest decision in the production and the most expensive 1 to get wrong.

A block that goes first is a decision. A filter that goes last is a correction.

Temperature is matched to the climate of each scene, and it is not a slider moved for mood. A tropical sunrise is warm light in wet air. A winter sunrise is warm light in frozen air. Same colour temperature, 2 different films, and the model only knows which 1 it is rendering if the block says so. Then 1 fixed light direction per scene, which is the far-side key: 1 half of the face lit, the rest in shadow, and the direction does not flip mid-scene. Blocking follows the same discipline. Every gesture points at its real target, never at the lens, unless the lens is the target. Hold the light and the gestures and 40 shots read as 1 film. Flip the key between 2 shots of the same room and the audience reads a cut in time that nobody announced.

The rule carrying everything above it is subtraction: take things out until nothing is left between the viewer and the subject. So the negative list is long and named, not implied. Glossy, airbrushed, plastic skin, waxy skin, CGI, 3D render, digital painting, over-smooth, beauty filter, uncanny, doll-like, wax figure, cartoon, anime, text, watermark, logo, caption, jittery, fast motion, motion blur, warped, extra limbs, extra fingers, fused fingers, deformed hands, extra digits, morphing face, identity drift, cloned face, cloned subject, out of focus, blurry, low quality, oversaturated, halo, vignette, reaching toward the camera, looking at the camera, fourth wall break. Nude and sexual frames append a second tier on top of that 1: size and shape, proportions, anatomy. 2 tiers, and the second tier only exists on the frames that need it. The probability that a film assembled from 40 separately prompted shots reads as 1 film is close to 0, and the probability that a film carrying 1 block at the front of all 240 prompts reads as 1 film is close to 1. The block is the first 1 of those 2 things you write and the last 1 you are allowed to change. Everything downstream, the ladder, the light, the format, the 500 tungsten stock, inherits a decision that was already made. Skip it and the film does not fail loudly. It fails quietly, 1 unrelated beautiful shot at a time.
