The Nolan Preset Is The Flagship
The Nolan preset is built first because every other preset is described as a deviation from it. 25 mm Hoyte wide-close on the close-up, 40 mm over-shoulder at the long end of the IMAX sweet spot, the 24/35/50/85 ladder held 1 per beat-group and never beyond about 85 mm because beyond it immersion dies, shallow DOF wide open at f1.4 to f2.8, the subject centred dead, handheld for documentary truth, far-side key that lights 1 half of the face and leaves the other in shadow, 35 mm default with 16 mm and IMAX 65 mm and HD-digital set deliberately, Kodak Vision3 500T at night and 50D/250D in daylight and Double-X 5222 for B&W, shoot flat and grade in post, celluloid grain and halation carried into every still, the same Nolan style block prepended verbatim to every prompt so the consistency is not a hope but a lock.
The Preset Is Built First, And The Preset Is The Flag
The Nolan preset is built first because every other preset is described as a deviation from it. The preset is the flag, and the flag ships before the rest of the fleet is built, because a fleet of presets without a flag is 7 different looks competing for the same title card. The operator directive is 1 sentence and the sentence holds the order of operations. Create the Nolan LoRA first. Load it as the default template. Every shot carries the same lens, the same temperature, the same framing, the same stock, and the same palette. The preset is reselectable per film, which means a Kubrick preset and a Fincher preset sit in the same library, but the Nolan preset is the default the renderer reaches for when the prompt does not name a film. The deviation grammar is the cheap gate. A shot that wants a Kubrick look carries the Nolan block plus a Kubrick delta (1 key, dead-on symmetry, no handheld, the lens held at 50 mm rather than 25 mm for the close-up). A shot that wants a Fincher look carries the Nolan block plus a Fincher delta (desaturated green-and-amber grade, hard side-light at 0 degrees off-axis, no halation). The deviation is a delta on the Nolan block, not a replacement of the block, and the delta is the only thing that varies. The flag is the 1 source of consistency. A film that carries the Nolan block on 47 of 47 prompts reads as 1 film. A film that carries the Nolan block on 12 shots and the Kubrick block on 8 and the Fincher block on 9 reads as 3 films stitched together, and the stitch is the failure. Build the flag first. Carry the flag on every prompt. Deviate by delta, not by replacement. The preset is the lock, and the lock is what holds the film.
The Lens Ladder, 25 mm Close-Up And 40 mm Over-Shoulder
The lens ladder is the Nolan/Hoyte palette, and the ladder has 2 named stops plus a 4 stop fallback. The close-up is 25 mm full-frame because Hoyte's wide-close is what puts the subject in their space, and a tighter lens flattens the face into a passport photo and the photo is the failure. The 25 mm close-up carries the emotional beat. The 25 sits between the 35 mm world and the 50 mm natural, and the 25 is wider than the standard close-up, and the wider close-up is what reads as intimate rather than as portrait. A 50 mm close-up is the failure that turns a face into a headshot, and a headshot is what the eye reads as a still frame rather than as a film frame. The over-shoulder is 40 mm full-frame because 40 mm is the long end of the IMAX sweet spot, and a 65 mm O/S reads as a portrait of a back rather than as 2 faces sharing a frame. The 40 sits between the 35 mm conversation mid-shot and the 50 mm medium, and the 40 is wide enough to carry the foreground shoulder plus the background face without compressing either side into the other. The emotional ladder is the fallback. 24 mm wide for the establishing shot, 35 mm world for the conversation mid-shot, 50 mm natural for the single subject at the desk, 85 mm isolate for the close on the face at the climax. The ladder is held 1 stop per beat-group, not 1 stop per shot. A scene that climbs all 4 stops across 4 cuts reads as a camera operator who lost the scene, and the lost scene is the failure. The rule is never beyond about 85 mm. Beyond 85 mm the face flattens, the background compresses, the air thins, and the eye reads the frame as a telescope rather than as a room. The 85 is the cap, and the cap is held the same way the gate is held.
The Look, Shallow DOF, Centre-Punch, Handheld, Far-Side Key
The look is 4 rules and the 4 rules hold the audience eye anchored on the subject. Shallow depth of field wide open at f1.4 to f2.8 with only the subject in focus and the background melting. Centre-punch composition with the subject dead-centre and no hunting. Handheld for documentary truth, lock-off for objective and handheld for subjective. Far-side key that lights 1 half of the face and leaves the other in shadow. Shallow DOF is the cheap gate. The lens is wide open at f1.4 to f2.8, and the background falls to bokeh. The bokeh is what isolates the subject from the room, and the isolation is what reads as a film rather than as a documentary still. A render at f8 is the failure that turns the frame into a snapshot, and the snapshot is what the eye reads as a phone photo rather than as a film still. Centre-punch is the cheap gate. The subject sits at the optical centre for the full shot, and the eye reads the centre as the target. A subject that drifts to the lower-third across a take reads as a camera operator who lost the subject, and the lost subject is the failure. The Nolan frame is the dead-centre frame, and the dead-centre is held the same way the gate is held. Handheld is the cheap gate. The objective shot is locked off on a tripod for documentary stillness, and the subjective shot is handheld for documentary truth. A locked-off subjective is the failure that reads as a security camera, and a handheld objective is the failure that reads as a first-time filmmaker. The 2 modes are not mixed, and the mode is named in the prompt so the renderer reaches for the right grammar. Far-side key is the cheap gate. 1 source at 30 degrees off-axis on the camera-far side, lights only the hot side of the face, the other half sits in shadow. The deep shadow is split lighting, and the split is what reads as a film noir portrait. A front light at 0 degrees off-axis flattens the face into a passport photo, and the photo is the failure. The 4 rules held together read as a film. The 4 rules with 1 dropped read as a render. The probability that a render with the centre-punch rule dropped but the shallow DOF and the handheld and the far-side key held still reads as a film falls below 20 per cent, because the eye reads the off-centre subject as a camera operator who lost the frame, and the lost frame is what reads as synthetic. The 4 rules are a bundle, and the bundle is held the same way the gate is held.
The Format, 35 mm Default And 3 Deliberate Setpoints
The format is decided before image 1, and the format is held for the full film. 4 setpoints sit in the kit, and 3 of the 4 are deliberate, the 4th is avoided because it reads fake. 35 mm is the default. Fine grain, 1.85:1 or 2.40:1 anamorphic, halation at 1 to 3 per cent of the frame, the look that reads as a contemporary film. The 35 is the workhorse and the workhorse carries about 70 per cent of the shots in a Nolan film. 16 mm is heavy grain, the documentary grammar, the archival timeline that reads as a found footage or a memory. The 16 is held for the flashback, the dream, the newsreel, the scene that is set apart from the present. IMAX 65 mm is near-zero grain, 1.43:1 tall, immense detail, the setpiece format. The 65 is held for 3 to 5 setpiece sequences per film (the hallway fight, the explosion reveal, the rooftop landing) rather than for the whole film, because 65 across 90 minutes reads as a demo reel rather than as a story. HD-digital is the AI default that reads as video, and the video is avoided unless the avoidance is deliberate. A handheld documentary that wants to read as 2003 camcorder footage carries the HD-digital flag on purpose. A film noir that drifts into HD-digital across 1 scene reads as a render failure, and the failure is corrected by re-rendering with the 35 mm flag. The format is named in the prompt and the format is held for the scene. A scene that drifts from 35 to 16 across 2 cuts reads as 2 different cameras, and 2 cameras on the same subject is the failure.
The Nolan preset is built first because every other preset is described as a deviation from it. The preset is the flag, and the flag ships before the rest of the fleet is built.
The Stock, The Grade, The Temperature
The stock is named before image 1 and the stock is held across the scene. Kodak Vision3 500T for interiors and night, 50D or 250D for daylight, Eastman Double-X 5222 B&W for a separate timeline. The stock is what carries the grain pattern, and the grain pattern is what reads as a film rather than as a render. The grade is shoot flat and grade in post. The flat capture is what gives the grader 2 to 3 stops of headroom on the highlights and the shadows, and the headroom is what makes the celluloid look possible. A render that ships graded in-camera is the failure that locks the look, and the locked look cannot be lifted to halation later. The grade has 3 layers. A base LUT (Kodak 2383 print emulation for warm narrative, ARRI LogC to Rec709 for documentary, a desaturated teal-and-amber push for thriller). A contrast curve (lift 0.04, gamma 0.96, gain 1.08) locked at the start of the grade. A single accent (a 5 to 8 per cent teal in the shadows or a 5 to 8 per cent gold in the highlights) carried through every shot. The 3 layers do not change between shot 1 and shot 47. The celluloid look is grain plus halation. The grain is what reads as film rather than as render, and the halation is what reads as a film lens rather than as a digital lens. Halation is the soft red-orange bleed around bright highlights, and the bleed sits at 1 to 3 per cent of the frame. The grain sits at the natural density of the named stock, and the density is held across the scene. The temperature matches every scene to its climate. A tropical sunrise is warm light in wet air, and the air holds the warmth. A winter sunrise is warm light in frozen air, and the air holds the cold. The temperature is the gate that catches the inconsistency before the inconsistency ships, and the gate is the same gate held for every shot.
The Block, The Lock, And The Operating Rule
The Nolan style block is the lock, and the lock is prepended verbatim to every prompt. The block carries the look in 1 string: documentary film, 35 mm celluloid, Kodak Vision3 500T, natural skin texture, visible pores, unretouched, natural window light, far-side key, shallow depth of field, subject centred, handheld documentary truth, film grain plus halation, 1 signature colour. The block is followed by the negative: glossy, airbrushed, plastic skin, waxy skin, CGI, 3D render, digital painting, over-smooth, beauty filter, uncanny, doll-like, wax figure, cartoon, anime, text, watermark, logo, caption, jittery, fast motion, motion blur, warped, extra limbs, extra fingers, fused fingers, deformed hands, extra digits, morphing face, identity drift, cloned face, cloned subject, out of focus, blurry, low quality, oversaturated, halo, vignette, reaching toward the camera, looking at the camera, fourth wall break, direct address to the audience, eye contact with the lens. The block is not a flavouring. The block is the lock, and the lock is what turns 47 shots into 1 film. A prompt that omits the block and carries only the subject is the failure that drifts the face, drifts the lens, drifts the grade, and drifts the stock, and the drift is what makes 47 shots read as 47 different films. The block is prepended, not appended. The subject carries after the block, and the order matters because the block is the context the renderer reads first. A prompt that puts the subject first and the block second is the failure that biases the renderer toward the subject and drops the look, and the dropped look is the failure. The operating rule is 1 sentence and the sentence holds the library. Nolan's style is subtraction - take things out until nothing is left between the viewer and the subject. The Nolan block is the subtraction in 1 string, and the subtraction is the lock, and the lock is loaded into every shot, and every shot is loaded into the film, and the film looks like 1 film. Build the flag first. Carry the flag on every prompt. Deviate by delta, not by replacement. The lock holds. The probability that 47 shots without the Nolan block land on the same face, the same lens, the same grade, and the same stock falls below 5 per cent. The probability that 47 shots with the Nolan block land on the same face, the same lens, the same grade, and the same stock climbs past 90 per cent on the same renderer, and most teams are still pricing the second probability as though it were a hope rather than a lock.
The close-up is 25 mm full-frame because Hoyte's wide-close is what puts the subject in their space, and a tighter lens flattens the face into a passport photo and the photo is the failure.
