The Moment Before The Touch Is The Subject

1 still can lock a performance before any motion exists, and the way it is written decides whether it survives. An anticipation frame, a named ethnicity, 1 warm key from camera-left, and the word photorealistic left out on purpose. 6 principles, 0 renders.

01

The Frame Stops Just Before The Contact

The brief is 1 still, not a sequence, and the whole craft sits in where the frame stops. A woman in a dim dance studio, mid-wait: body perfectly still, weight shifted onto 1 hip, 1 hand resting at the base of the collarbone, eyes slightly lowered but watching, lips parted, breath held. She stops short of the touch, and that is deliberate. Anticipation is the subject. Contact is a different frame and a lesser one, because the charge has somewhere to go and it leaves. Held, the charge has nowhere to go and it stays. I have watched the same arithmetic decide a room full of people. In 2008 I signed a EUR 20 million personal guarantee against a plan that assumed every future moment would arrive on schedule, and the company folded on Christmas Day. What survives is the thing built for the pause.

02

Stillness Is A Specification, Not An Atmosphere

The difference between a frame that holds and a frame that reads as a stock photo is 1 word choice. The prompt says breath held. It does not say nervous. Breath held is a fact a camera can see: the shoulders set, the ribcage still, the jaw carrying a little tension. Nervous is a judgement about an interior state, and a model asked to render a judgement guesses. It fills that guess with the average of everything it has seen, which is the glossiest version of the emotion available. The rule generalises: describe what the sensor would record and leave the interpretation outside the frame. 12 stages of a production pipeline follow the same order, and the 3 that lean on feeling - performance, framing and grade - only work when the 9 under them are facts. 16 years of field work, from rural Nigeria to post-conflict Serbia to Kazan to Fukushima, taught the same thing in rougher settings. Measure the observable. Name the rest only when it is a number.

03

Lock The Face You Actually Want

Ethnicity is named explicitly in the master prompt: a Latina woman in her late 30s, warm deep-brown skin, dark hair pulled loosely back. That is not decoration. A model does not carry an unstated attribute between generations. Left to assume, it re-derives the face from the seed and the sentence, and 2 runs of the same prompt deliver 2 different people. Name the skin tone and the hair texture and the frame becomes repeatable, which matters the moment a second still has to sit beside the first. We built 200 wood-gasification machines across the UK and Europe on that principle: what is not written into the specification is not in the build, and the plants that held were the ones whose tolerances were on paper. 11 countries, 1 lesson.

04

Ask For Documentary, Never Photorealistic

The word photorealistic is deliberately absent, and that is the counter-intuitive part. Say photorealistic and a realism-biased model pushes to glossy: the skin goes even, the shadows lift, and the frame starts to look like a render pretending to be a photograph. The prompt instead says documentary film, 35 mm, natural skin texture, unretouched, intimate, cinematic, shallow depth of field, subtle film grain. Every one of those is a property of a camera and a stock, not a claim about realism. The result reads as a photograph because the prompt described a photograph being taken. The same substitution held a EUR 75 million industrial group together: we stopped asking 12 departments for quality and started asking for 1 operating standard, and quality arrived as a by-product. The probability that a model told to be realistic returns an unretouched frame is not zero. Most people price it at zero, then buy a skin-retouch pass.

Anticipation is the subject. Contact is a different frame and a lesser one.

05

1 Warm Key From Camera-Left

Lighting is 1 decision, not a rig. A single warm key from camera-left, around 3200 K, rakes across the body. The far side of the face holds the light and the rest falls into soft shadow. The studio behind her stays dim and is only suggested: mirrors and darkness, nothing dressed. The hot side of the face is where the shot lives, and the shadow side is what gives it shape. Add a fill light and the frame flattens into a catalogue. The rest of the spec is small and load-bearing: fitted black dancewear, a simple tank and leggings, barefoot on a worn wooden floor. 3 nouns that stop the model inventing anything. 210 energy systems were deployed across Africa and Asia on exactly that logic - a named unit, a named standard, and no room left for the site to improvise.

06

The Negative Prompt Is The Brief Read Backwards

The negative names every artefact the frame is holding off: glossy, airbrushed, plastic skin, CGI, 3D render, digital painting, beauty filter, uncanny, wax figure, overexposed, harsh flat lighting, oversaturated. 12 words doing work that 12 sentences of positive instruction would do badly, because a positive instruction about skin describes what skin should look like and a negative instruction names the failure directly. Read it back and it is the same brief: the frame is documentary, so everything documentary is not has to be excluded. That is also why the master prompt lives in the vault instead of in someone's chat history. Ready to fire means 1 paste, 0 hand-editing, and the same 6 principles every time the room is rebuilt and the delivery moves from 1080 by 1920 vertical to a 16:9 master. The probability that a prompt kept in a chat thread is the prompt reused in 6 months is not zero. Most people price it at zero, then rewrite it from memory. 393 pages and 12 countries of building taught me that the asset is never the session. It is the file the next session starts from.

Breath held is a fact a camera can see. Nervous is a judgement, and a model guesses at judgements.
