The Ids That Never Arrived

One log holds 5 records, keyed 33, 34, 35, 36 and 39. Ids 37 and 38 are not in it. The file beside it holds 8 records, keyed 22 and then 33 through 39, and both 37 and 38 are there with a link and a time. Two files, one run, 2 different answers to the question of what was made. The gap was never in the work. It was in the file.

01

Five Rows And A Hole In The Middle

The file is 2,055 bytes. Its sha256 begins 2bc035f12df19228. Inside it are 5 records, keyed 33, 34, 35, 36 and 39. Ids 37 and 38 are not present, and nothing before 33 is either. Four of the 5 records carry 5 fields: done, clip_url, file, bytes and ts. The fifth carries 2: done and error. Read the keys on their own and the run appears to have opened at 33 and skipped 2 numbers in the middle of it. Read the byte count and it is a small file with a clean shape. Both readings are properties of the file. Neither is a property of the run.

02

What The Four Finished Rows Carry

The 4 done rows each carry a clip_url, a file path, a byte count and a timestamp. Every one of the 4 URLs is 147 characters long and every one resolves to the same CDN host. They are 4 distinct URLs, so they are 4 distinct clips. The byte counts run from 6,987,389 to 7,595,583 and add to 29,088,470 bytes of finished clip. The timestamps read 14:21:10, 14:30:03, 14:33:43 and 14:38:48. Between the first and the last sits 1,057.8 seconds, which is 17 minutes 37.8 seconds. The 3 gaps between the 4 of them are 532.4 seconds, 220.2 seconds and 305.1 seconds. So the run is 4 renders in 17 minutes, unevenly spaced, and every one of the 4 wrote down the same 4 things.

03

The Fifth Row Is The Longest And Holds The Least

Row 33 carries done false and one error string of 600 characters. It is the longest record in the file by a factor of 4. Inside those 600 characters is the request the API was handed: an id, a uuid, an access token and the parameters, which carry an input image URL and the prompt itself. What that row does not hold is a clip_url, a file, a byte count or a timestamp. So the record that says the least about the result says the most about the attempt. A success writes down the asset. A failure writes down the request and then stops. The 4 rows that can hand you a file are 147 characters wide. The 1 that cannot is 600.

04

Two Numbers That Are Not In This File

Ids 37 and 38 are absent here, and both of them are in the file sitting next to it in the same folder. That file is 1,732 bytes, its sha256 begins 884892932d0f2fb1, and it is keyed 22 and then 33 through 39. Id 37 carries a 147 character link ending in .jpg and a timestamp of 14:08:36. Id 38 carries a different 147 character link and a timestamp of 14:11:12. So the 2 ids the first file cannot account for are accounted for 1 file away, each with a link and a time of its own. Nothing was lost. One ledger simply never got the line, and the number that was missing from 1 column was present in the other the whole time.

2,055 bytes. 5 records. Ids 37 and 38 are not in them.

05

The Order Is Not The Id

In the second file, id 39 carries a stamp of 13:13:10. Id 33 carries 13:43:27, which is 30 minutes 17 seconds later, and 34 through 38 run from 14:01:02 to 14:11:12. So the highest id in that file was written half an hour before the lowest one, and its clip lands in the other file after id 36. The ids are labels, not a sequence. The same file's lowest id, 22, is the one row that failed, and it failed on code 97, insufficient balance, at 12:53:52. A rejected render still takes an id and still keeps its place in the ledger. The numbering runs across attempts and successes both, which is exactly why a missing number reads like missing work.

06

A Gap Is A Property Of The File You Opened

The 4 file paths in the clips log all point into a home directory this machine does not have. All 4 of those clips are referenced and 0 of them are on this disk. That is the same lesson as the 2 missing ids, read one level up. A path is a reference. A number is a label. Neither of them is the object, and neither of them is the work. The probability that a run of renders stretching across 3,481.8 seconds would produce 4 rows in one file, 8 rows in another, and a 2 number hole that only 1 of the 2 shows is not low, and none of that is a defect. It is what happens when 2 tools each keep their own account of one job. On the 210 energy systems deployed across Africa and Asia, a unit counted as installed only when its serial and its site were written in the same row as its commissioning date, because a serial in one ledger and a file in another cannot be reconciled 2 years later. Count the objects. Read the second ledger before you call anything missing. Keep more of yourself, for longer.

4 rows carry 5 fields. 1 row carries 2.
