The Flat Render Is Half The Pipeline

The Flat Render Is Half The Pipeline

The flat render is half the pipeline because half the look does not live in the prompt, it lives in the grading suite. Seedance costs about 10 euros per output and has no LoRA control because the API is a closed black box, so the cheap route keeps working by asking the model to ship raw footage that is flat and desaturated, and the grade that the closed box cannot prompt in is graded in post by a human on a calibrated monitor with a 3 layer LUT stack and a colour-managed timeline.

01

The Cheap API Has No LoRA Control, And The Cheap Route Still Ships

The Seedance API costs about 10 euros per output and the economics are the reason the pipeline exists. A render at 10 euros that lands on a deadline is a feature, and the feature is held the same way every other feature on the pipeline is held. The cheap API is a closed black box. ByteDance ships the model and ships the API and ships nothing about what is inside, so there is no LoRA slot, no custom weight upload, no fine-tune endpoint, no style hook that a LoRA could fire. A request for a LoRA-style control on Seedance lands on a closed box, and the closed box returns the request without acting on it. The substitute is to load the look into the prompt as fully as possible, render as flat as the model will tolerate, and grade what lands. The substitute does not give back LoRA fidelity, and the substitute is not pretending to. The substitute gives back a cheap render that a human can lift to a film look on a calibrated monitor in a proper suite, and the lift is half the pipeline. The rule is 1 sentence and the sentence holds the order of operations. Render flat. Grade externally. The flat render is the raw footage, and the grade is half the look. A pipeline that pushes the grade into the prompt is the failure that asks the closed box for a deliverable the closed box cannot ship. The closed box can hold camera moves. The closed box is trained on camera moves. The closed box is not trained on grading decisions, and the grading decisions live in the suite, not in the prompt.

02

Render As Flat And Desaturated As Possible, That Is The Whole Trick

Render as flat and desaturated as possible is the standing instruction on every Seedance prompt. The instruction is short on purpose. The instruction is 4 words and the 4 words tell the closed box to push contrast toward the middle, push saturation toward the middle, ship a frame that holds 2 to 3 stops of headroom on both highlights and shadows, and leave the colour decisions to the grader. Flat is the cheap gate. A render that ships graded in-camera is the failure that locks the look, and the locked look cannot be lifted to halation later. A render that ships flat holds the headroom, and the headroom is what makes celluloid grain, halation at 1 to 3 per cent, teal-and-orange contrast, and skin-tone rebalance all possible on a single graded pass. Desaturated is the cheap gate. A render that lands at full saturation is the failure that clipps the colour channel on the highlights and pulls every skin tone toward orange. A render that lands desaturated holds the chroma below the clip and the chroma is rebalanced in the grade toward the named palette. Raw footage is the standing line in the prompt. Raw footage means flat, and the renderer is told to ship raw. A renderer that ships polished is the failure that costs a re-shoot, and a re-shoot at 10 euros a pop turns 100 shots into a 1000 euro invoice, and the invoice is the failure. The renderer is told to ship raw and the grader is told to do the work. The work lives downstream, and downstream is half the pipeline.

03

The Grading Suite Carries What The Prompt Could Not

The grading suite is the second half of the pipeline, and the suite is where the look is built. A flat render that lands on a calibrated monitor is graded in 3 layers: a base LUT that names the print emulation (Kodak 2383 for warm narrative, ARRI LogC to Rec709 for documentary, a desaturated teal-and-amber push for thriller), a contrast curve that locks lift, gamma and gain at the start of the grade, a single accent (5 to 8 per cent teal in the shadows or 5 to 8 per cent gold in the highlights) carried through every shot. The base LUT is the cheap gate. A LUT that names a print emulation gives the grader a known start point and the known start point is what makes the celluloid look reproducible across 100 shots. A LUT that is generic and unbranded is the failure that drifts the look, and the drifted look reads as 3 different grades on the same film. The contrast curve is the cheap gate. Lift 0.04, gamma 0.96, gain 1.08 is the curve that holds the headroom and the headroom is what makes grain and halation sit on the frame without crushing the blacks. A curve that opens the blacks to 0.1 is the failure that crashes the contrast into a video look and the video look is what the eye flags as fake. The single accent is the cheap gate. A film that carries 1 accent across 100 shots reads as 1 film. A film that carries 3 accents across 100 shots reads as 3 films, and the 3 films is the failure. The accent is named at the start of the grade and the named accent is held the same way the Nolan flagship preset is held. The suite is calibrated and the suite is colour-managed. A suite that has not been calibrated in 30 days is the failure that ships a grade that looks right on the monitor and wrong on the projector, and the wrong-on-the-projector grade is what the audience reads as a render failure.

Lighting And Shadow Consistency Is Already Strong, So The Grade Just Lifts

Lighting and shadow consistency across Seedance generations is already strong on the closed box. The closed box holds the key angle, the shadow side, the ambient fill, the practical lamp direction, and the practical lamp falls-off across 100 shots without the prompt having to re-state the lighting per shot. Strong lighting is the cheap gate. A pipeline that has to re-prompt the lighting on every shot is a pipeline that is paying 10 euros 100 times for the same setup. A pipeline that holds the lighting once and lets the closed box carry it is a pipeline that is paying 10 euros 100 times for 100 different camera moves on the same lit scene, and the efficiency is the feature. The grader does not have to fix the lighting. The grader lifts the colour, the contrast, the grain, the halation, and the accent, and the lift is what turns a flat render into a film still. A grade that re-lights the scene is the failure that fights the closed box and the fight is the failure. The skin tone is the cheap gate. The closed box holds skin tone across cuts, and the skin tone is graded toward the named palette without redrawing the skin. A grade that re-skins the face is the failure that turns a face into a wax figure and the wax figure is what the eye reads as fake. The closed box holds the lighting. The grader holds the look. The 2 halves do not fight, and the not-fighting is what makes the cheap route ship.

The flat render is half the pipeline because half the look does not live in the prompt, it lives in the grading suite.

Camera Moves Live In The Prompt, Lighting Lives In The Grade

Camera moves live in the prompt because the assistant is trained on camera moves. The assistant reads the prompt and reaches for the camera move that the language describes (push in, pull out, dolly left, dolly right, track with, pan, tilt, handheld shake, locked-off tripod). The camera move is the cheap gate and the cheap gate is held. Lighting does not live in the prompt because the closed box holds the lighting automatically. The prompt names the climate (tropical sunrise, neon alley, overcast morning, sodium-vapour streetlamp) and the closed box reaches for the lighting that matches the climate. The lighting decision is held by the closed box, and the holding is the cheap gate. The split is deliberate. Camera moves belong in the prompt because the camera is what the operator can choose per shot. Lighting belongs in the grade because the lighting is what the operator can lift per film. A pipeline that puts camera moves in the grade is a pipeline that has lost the moves, and a pipeline that puts lighting in the prompt is a pipeline that re-lit the closed box for no reason. The grader touches the camera move by cutting on action, matching eyelines, holding the 30 degree rule, holding the 180 degree rule. The grader holds the camera moves at the cut because the cut is where the camera move is named, and the named move is what holds the scene invisible. The split holds across 100 shots because the operator names the moves once and the grader names the grade once. The 100 shots share the same lighting grammar and the 100 shots share the same look, and the shared look is what makes 100 shots read as 1 film.

Fully Automated Stays, And The Human Touches The Frame At Grading Only

Fully automated stays means the pipeline that ships a render for 10 euros per output stays. The human does not touch the camera move, does not touch the lighting, does not touch the staging, does not touch the wardrobe, does not touch the casting, does not touch the prompt. The human touches the frame at the grading stage, and the grading stage is the only place the human touches the frame. Touching at grading only is the cheap gate. A pipeline that asks a human to re-light a scene is a pipeline that has lost the 10 euro economics. A pipeline that asks a human to re-prompt a render because the colour drifted is a pipeline that has lost the closed-box consistency. A pipeline that asks a human only at the grading stage is a pipeline that holds the 10 euro economics and holds the closed-box consistency and holds the human cost at the 1 stage where the human cost pays for itself. The human at grading is not the failure. The human at grading is the feature. The closed box cannot grade a film because the closed box cannot hold a palette across 100 shots, and the probability the closed box could hold that palette sits at about 0 because the closed box has no memory of the previous take. The human names the LUT, names the curve, names the accent, names the skin tone, names the temperature, and the named look is held for the film. Operating rule is 1 sentence and the sentence holds the library. Render flat, grade externally, fully automated stays. The flat render is half the pipeline because the flat render carries the raw footage that the grader lifts. The grade is half the pipeline because the grade carries the look that the prompt could not. Twelve companies run the same flat-render pipeline on 3 lettered brands across this continent, and the savings across the 12 companies run about 90 per cent versus a fully manual rebuild that costs 1000 euros per shot and holds no consistency. The cheap route ships. The look holds. The human touches the frame at grading. The 2 halves hold the film, and the film reads as a film.

No LoRA on the closed black box means style control has to move downstream, and downstream is the grading suite, not the prompt.
