The Filter Runs Before The Scout

The system holds 20 places and 6 registers, and the register is picked before anybody walks the location. The 20 places sit in 5 families: 6 in hospitality, 5 in work, 3 on the coast, 3 in the city and 3 on land. The registers are the 6 ways a camera is allowed to behave: a phone plate, cinema anamorphic, editorial medium format, aerial, documentary handheld and analog consumer. Every place is assigned 1 of the 6, and the assignment is written down as a spec rather than left to whoever is standing on the ground holding the camera. That is the whole point of the ordering. A scout who arrives without a register has to invent the look on location, in the light that happens to be there, with the crew that happens to be booked, and the plate that comes back is 1 opinion about 1 afternoon. A scout who arrives with the register already chosen is executing a decision that was made calmly, in advance, against the whole set of 20.

Each of the 6 registers carries 3 fixed things: the camera behaviour, the aspect and the cue words. R1 is the phone plate at 4:5, 1344 x 1680, with careless framing, a tilted horizon and blown windows, and it is the 1 register that wants the faults named item by item. R2 is 2.39:1 anamorphic with oval bokeh and halation on the highlights, deep contrast and negative fill. R3 is editorial medium format at 3:4 with 1 hard key light on porcelain, retouched skin. R4 is a 16:9 aerial with a polarised sky and no bokeh anywhere in the frame. R5 is documentary handheld at 3:2 or 16:9 in available light, real rooms with real mess. R6 is analog consumer at 4:3 with halation and chroma bleed, and it is never post-degraded after the fact. 6 registers, 6 behaviours, and no place is allowed 2 of them at once. Fixing the aspect as well as the camera matters for 1 mechanical reason: a 16:9 aerial and a 4:3 consumer frame of the same 20 places do not read as the same company.

Every 1 of the 20 packs carries 2 lists, and both are written in advance. The on list names the cues that switch the register on. For the anamorphic pack those are anamorphic, 2.39:1, halation, oval bokeh, tungsten practicals, negative fill and silhouette, 7 terms in total. For the phone plate the on list holds 5 items and it is deliberately itemised: the tilt in degrees, which edge cuts the subject, what intrudes and where, flash-off and the blown window. For the aerial pack the on list is 6 terms, including a polarised sky and a long shadow. 2 lists per pack, 20 packs, 40 strings of cue words, all of them fixed before a single frame is requested from any model. The lists stay short on purpose. A cue list that runs long stops selecting anything, because every frame eventually matches something on it.

The off list is the half that earns its place, because the cues that switch a look on are easy and the cues that leak in by accident are not. For the phone plate the off list names 7 settings: documentary film, 35mm, cinematic, natural light, shallow depth of field, moody and golden hour. Each 1 of those drags a careless phone frame out of the phone register and into editorial without anybody deciding to, which is the exact failure the off list exists to prevent. The anamorphic pack bans 5: phone faults, on-camera flash, deep-focus wide, casual tilt and auto-exposure drift. The handheld pack bans 4, including studio strobe and hyper-saturation. The analog pack bans 4, and 1 of them is high dynamic range, the single cue most likely to make a 4:3 consumer plate read as a modern digital file with a filter laid over the top of it. The off list is what makes the register hold when the model starts improvising.

The 20 places are only useful if a search can find them, and that is where the spec has a hole. The location facet in the media database holds 28 tokens. Of the 20 packs, 7 already own an exact token and can be returned by name. The other 13 do not, and their nearest match is an adjacent place: the dining room indexes as a kitchen, the cliff coast as an outside, the suite as a hotel, the loft as a studio. A pack that indexes as its neighbour is a pack the search contract cannot return, which means 13 of the 20 packs are effectively invisible to anybody looking for them. The fix is written into the same spec rather than into somebody's memory: 13 tokens to add, and they are named - restaurant, cliff, suite, speakeasy, cafe, neon, alley, mountain, vineyard, lobby, plant, stage and loft. Nothing about the pictures changes. What changes is whether 13 packs can be found at all.

A location filter is a decision about what the camera is allowed to do, made before the camera arrives. Hold 20 places across 5 families, choose 1 of 6 registers per place, write 2 lists for each 1, and name the 13 missing tokens, and the 20 places stop being a mood board and become a set of instructions. The probability that 2 different crews shoot the same place the same way rises the moment the register is written down, and it rises again when the off list is pasted verbatim instead of re-typed from memory. Leave the register open and 20 places produce 20 opinions.
