The Archive Is A Decision With A Date

The tree holds 13 cutlist.json files. Six sit under 04_Archive and seven under cuts, and both sides carry the same internal shape: a 00_Brief holding the list, a 03_Finals holding what the list produced, and 4 declared outputs repeated under the same 4 keys in all 13 files. A final, an EDL, an FCPXML and a review. 13 times 4 is 52 declared outputs. The schema version reads 1 in 13 of 13. The delivery block is identical in 13 of 13: 16:9, 1920 by 1080, 24 frames per second, minus 16 LUFS. The music block is identical too, and that is the first number worth stopping on. All 13 lists name a bed of 206.160978 seconds from one file, songs_sal_y_miel.0V1.0.mp3. Thirteen separate decisions, cut on one song.

Of the 52 declared output paths, 22 resolve on disk and 30 do not. The split is not even across the two folders. The 7 working lists declare 28 outputs and 22 of those are really there. The 6 archived lists declare 24 outputs and 0 of them are there. The resolution test is not a judgment call. Each value is an absolute path, and the path either opens or it does not. 30 missing paths is 57.69 per cent of the 52. The working side resolves 78.57 per cent of what it promised, and the archived side resolves nothing at all. Both sides draw on the same pools of footage, the same 24 frames per second, the same minus 16 LUFS. One side can find its own files and the other cannot.

Every one of the 6 archived lists points its 4 declarations into a folder under cuts carrying its own name. Sequence 01 points at cuts/sal_y_miel_movie_sequence_01. Sequence 05 points at cuts/sal_y_miel_movie_sequence_05. The tiktok movie sequence points at cuts/tiktok_short_film_movie_sequence_01. cuts holds exactly 7 folders, and they are sequence 06, 2 social hooks, 2 social teasers and 2 tiktok social hooks. Not one archived name has a folder there. So 24 addresses were written, the folders were named, and the folders never existed. The declared review path for sequence 05 asks for cuts/sal_y_miel_movie_sequence_05/00_Brief/REVIEW.md, while the review itself sits at 04_Archive/sal_y_miel_movie_sequence_05/00_Brief/REVIEW.md at 4,974 bytes. The artefact is on disk. The address is not.

The probability that a declared path and the file it names stay in the same place at the end of a project is not zero, and almost everyone is pricing it at zero. The rule held on the 210 energy systems deployed across Africa and Asia: a unit is as findable as the record that points at it, and a record with a wrong address finds nothing. 30 of 52 outputs are declared somewhere no longer on disk, and every one of them is still sitting on the drive.
