An Animatic Proves The Audio, Not The Film

A first cut has 1 job and it is not the picture. 6 rendered frames are held with slow alternating zoom moves and 1 second crossfades while the finished 206 second track is laid in as the full soundtrack, so the thing being proved is the audio integration and the running length rather than the film. The asset register is the useful part: 1 audio master, 1 draft cut at 1280 by 720 and 24 frames a second, 6 frames with the generator named, 1 treatment, 1 prompt pack and 1 render log, each with a path and a note. That register is what lets a second pair of eyes check the project without opening it.

01

A First Cut Is A Question

An animatic is not a small version of the film. It is 1 specific test, and the test has to be named before the first frame is placed. Ours had 3 numbers attached to it: 6 rendered stills, 1 finished track running 3 minutes and 26 seconds, and 1 draft cut at 1280 by 720 and 24 frames a second. The 6 frames are held with slow alternating zoom moves, 1 second crossfades between them, and the finished 206 second master laid in as the full soundtrack. Nothing in that describes a picture. What it proves is that the audio sits against the edit at the right length, and that a 6 frame previz reads as a sequence rather than a slideshow. I have signed off on 3 minute cuts that were beautiful and 14 seconds long against the song, and the 14 seconds is the part that costs a week. 1 file, 1 question, answered before any render budget is spent.

02

The Register Is The Deliverable

The most useful artefact of that first cut is a table. 1 audio master of 4.3 MB at 48 kHz stereo. 1 draft cut, 206 seconds, 1280 by 720, 24 frames a second, h264 plus aac. 6 frames from 1 named image model. 1 treatment, scene by scene. 1 prompt pack, frame by frame. 1 renders log with the frame manifest. Every row carries a path and a note, and that is the whole point of the row. A register like that is what lets a second pair of eyes audit the project without opening it, and it is what makes a handover a 10 minute conversation instead of a 2 day reconstruction. When I restructured a 75 million euro industrial group, the thing that made the transition survivable was not the new org chart, it was the asset list underneath it that named every line and every owner. A creative project deserves the same spine. 7 rows, 7 paths, 7 notes.

03

Name The Generator On Every Frame

Each of the 6 frames carries the name of the model that produced it and the version. That single column is worth more than the frames. A render without a named model is a screenshot of a result nobody can reproduce, and in 6 months the only honest answer to how it was made is a shrug. Our frame set was generated on 1 named image model, and the log records it per frame rather than once at the top of the document, because a project that adds a 7th frame next week will add it on whatever is current and the register has to survive that. Entrade put 200 wood-gasification machines across the UK and Europe on the same discipline: every unit traceable to a drawing revision, so a field fix 2 years later did not have to start from a photograph. The probability that a frame gets re-rendered without the original model named is not small. It is close to 1, and it is the quiet reason projects stall at the polish stage.

Split The Track Before You Cut To It

The editor asked for the lyrics and the section timestamps before anything else, and that request arrived with a date against it. The master is 206 seconds and it breaks down into Verse 1, Pre-Chorus, Chorus, Verse 2, Bridge and Outro, 6 sections marked on the page. That is a real artefact, and it is also an incomplete one, because the timestamps against those 6 marks are still pending audio analysis. Writing that gap down is the difference between a plan and a wish. Cut to a song without the section map and every decision becomes a taste argument in the room, because 2 people can both be right about a chorus entry they have each located by ear 14 frames apart. I lost my savings in the 2013 Cyprus bail-in, and what I took from it was how fast a number stops being checkable the moment nobody writes down where it came from. 6 sections, 6 timestamps, 1 document.

A first cut is a question, not a film.

05

4 Done, 2 Open, Written As Tasks

The status list carries 4 ticked boxes and 2 open ones. Done: the audio in the vault, the draft animatic assembled with the audio integrated, the cut shared, the lyrics in the vault. Open: the frames animated, and the final edit plus grade. The 2 open rows are written as tasks with named tools and a named gate rather than as worries, which is the only form that survives 3 weeks of other work arriving. Animate per the treatment under the 10 point quality gate on the named motion models. Edit to the song with cuts on the breath, the bridge held as 1 continuous take, and shots of 8 to 10 seconds. I deployed 210 energy systems across 11 countries in Africa and Asia on that shape: the design fixed once, the finish tuned per site, and every open item carrying a date and a name. A status list without owners is a diary.

06

A Draft That Names Its Own Gaps Is Previz

The last check is whether the document can be handed to someone who has never seen the project and still be useful in 5 minutes. Does the register list the paths. Do the 6 frames name their generator. Does the track carry its 6 sections and say plainly which timestamps are still pending. Are the 2 open rows written as work rather than as hope. If all 4 read yes, the draft is previz. If any of them reads no, it is a mood, and a mood cannot be scheduled or priced. The probability that a first cut gets treated as a finished film, by someone senior, in a meeting where nobody asks what it is, is not zero. It happens because the gap was never written down. 1 audio master, 6 frames, 206 seconds, 4 rows ticked and 2 open. The draft earns its next budget by naming exactly what it is not.

6 stills and a finished track can answer more than 60 renders and no soundtrack.
